perfume of a thousand things
The title takes its name from the poem illusions written by surrealist painter and writer kay sage in 1921. The publication was printed in conjunction with a show of the same title at 205 Hudson Gallery in New York, New York in the winter of 2024. These six artists, while exploring different themes in their personal work, held crossovers at the ideas of femininity, the other and the unknown. Rather than create a catalogue of the exhibition, the artists opted to create a visual diary of what they were thinking of and inspired by while making the works on view.

“ -ILLUSIONS-
I am the wind, as burning cool as wine That breaks the last illusions of the gold - I am the snow that makes the mountains shine As clear as crystal, white and pure and cold. I am the perfume of a thousand things, And I, the damp sweet smell of moss and brake, I am the silver of the bell that rings Her evening prayer upon the silent lake. I am the copper showered on the trees. The little stream that bubbles down the hill. I am the dripping stones. the scented breeze, The shining dew that lies so soft and still.
But now the mist has fallen on the lake. A cold grey veil of dampness hides the sky - - And dreams are only made for those who wake, And less - far less than all of these am I ;
Lago Maggiore. Nov. 1921.”
